February 2016

On behalf of Club President, Dexter Williams, and our members we would like to thank everyone in Selsey and District for their continued support with the 2015 Santa Float. This year with your generous help we raised £5080, which will enable us to assist good causes within the District. 2015 saw another busy, active and fun year for the members and supporters of Selsey Lions club. Thank you to everyone who has supported our activities and we wish everyone a belated Happy New Year and hope that 2016 is a good year for all.  Selsey Lions have received sponsorship from Henry Adams Estate Agents, Kevin Dayman, Manager the Selsey branch, said that as a family owned Business they were very proud to support and sponsor Selsey Lions Club in making their valuable contribution to the local community. Lion president Dexter Williams stated he was delighted on behalf of the Lions Club to include Henry Adams as a sponsor, assisting with the running costs of our recently acquired Mini Bus. So far the mini bus has been out during the Christmas period with the Santa Float and also helping in the local community by providing transport for elderly people on trips and events.

When do we meet?

Our regular monthly Business Meeting is held on the 2nd Monday of each month, at the Selsey Club in Coxes Road Selsey. Commencing at 8.00pm this normally lasts no more than a couple of hours.

We have a varied program of Social Events, usually held on the 4th Tuesday of each month at various venues where we are joined by spouses, partners and friends. We also hold an annual Charter Anniversary Dinner, Presidential Changeover Dinner and President’s BBQ.

How Does the Club Raise Money?

In addition to helping and supporting many Local Activities and Charities we also organize and run several popular events in Selsey during the year. These have included the Bands Bangers and Blues, the Christmas Carol Float, Moneymile, Talent Show, Summer Party, and Swimathon, as well as running stalls at various local fetes and events.

Who benefits from this Money?

The vast majority of the money we raise in spent locally, this is usual with most Lions Clubs. We support Hospices, Youth Organizations and many other local groups and individuals

In addition to this we have supported major disaster relief efforts, on-going projects run by Lions International as well as other charities both national and international.

Each year we run a Prize Draw to raise fund for a specific Charity chosen by the Club President, this year it is St. Wilfrid’s Hospice in recent years we have supported Selsey First Responders, Sussex Snowdrop Trust, Help for Heroes, Hounds for Heroes and St. Richard’s Hospital Eye Day Surgery Unit.

How can I find out more?

There are several ways of doing this…The easiest thing to do is to ask! You can arrange to come along to one of our social meetings; alternatively you can arrange to speak to one of our mem

Selsey in Bloom 2014

On Tuesday 15 July judges from the South and South East in Bloom project visited Selsey.  They were escorted around Selsey for 3 hours visiting a number of different locations at which they met volunteers who help to look after the many recreational sites.

This year the Selsey and District Lions Club supported the initiative by providing the transport and a driver to escort the judges around the town.

One of our members also helped to make Selsey a welcoming and attractive place to visit by tidying up around the ‘Wave' entrance to Selsey before the judges arrived.

Last year the Selsey in Bloom achieved the Silver Gilt Award - we have to wait until the awards ceremony in September to know what we will get this year.

March 2013

 Marie Curie

Marie Curie Cancer Care has chosen Lions Clubs as its first official collecting partner for the Great Daffodil Appeal.
The three-year project sees Lions Clubs throughout the British Isles aim to raise an additional £1 million for the charity's work in providing hospice and community care for terminally ill patients.
Lions Clubs' 17,000 active members are renowned for their enthusiastic commitment to local community fund-raising. Members of local clubs are supporting Marie Curie Cancer Care by holding hundreds of collections at Tesco stores and other locations as part of the Great Daffodil campaign.
The annual UK Giving 2012 survey, carried out by the Office of National Statistics, reported a 20% fall in charity donations in the last year. Cash is the most common method of donation, emphasising the importance of community collections.
Every £20 raised helps fund an hour of Marie Curie nursing care, which is provided free of charge to people with terminal cancer and other illnesses.
The Great Daffodil Appeal has raised £61.5 million since 1986, and Lions Clubs are proud to support the popular, and iconic, daffodil pin campaign.
Further information about the appeal can be found at: www.mariecurie.org.uk/daffodil.

Selsey Lions were very pleased to have been able to help raise £382 from a street collection in Selsey on Saturday 9th of March to which will be added a further donation of £50 from the Club.

What is the Message in a Bottle scheme?
It is a voluntary scheme designed to encourage people living on their own to keep their basic personal and medical details in a common location where it can be easily found in an emergency. There is no cost to the user. Costs of running the scheme are being borne by Selsey and District Lions Club.

Changeover Dinner
Following an excellent meal at the Selsey Club it was my privilege to present Lion Alan Bailey with a Wall Plaque to mark his retirement from the Club, and in recognition of his 39 year association with the Lions.
Alan began his Lions career back in 1972 when he joined Hailsham Lions Club, in 1977 he transferred to Selsey, shortly after this Club was formed. During the ensuing years he served on and chaired most of the Committees, serving no less than 3 terms as secretary, totalling some 15 years in all, and from 2002 to 2009 as Club Treasurer. In my term as President I have been very fortunate to have Alan as Chairman of the Activities Committee, a job which he has done with characteristic enthusiasm, due diligence and attention to detail.   I would like to thank Alan personally, for all the help and support he has given me during my year of office and on behalf of the Members for all the hard work and effort he has put in to the Club over the course of so many years.
It is now over three years since this Club voted to accept Ladies into its ranks, this decision has had a very positive outcome, we now have five "Lady Lions" who all make an active and significant contribution to the workings of the Club, in particular I would like to congratulate Lion Jean Furness on her progression to Vice President this year.
Finally at the end of my term as President: Thank you to all the members of the Selsey and District Lions for their help and support during my year and of course a big thank you to all those members of the public whose generosity and support made it possible for us to raise so much for various Charities, in particular the President's Prize Draw which raised £3,000 in support of Help For Heroes.
Incoming Club President Simon Walsh has chosen the St. Richard's Hospital iDSU (Eye Care Day Surgery Unit) Appeal as his charity for the President's Prize Draw this year; this is a really worthwhile project that will make World Class eye treatment available to the people of this area. We shall be selling tickets at various events throughout the summer, please help us to make this this a record year. You could win a cash prize of £250!
Band & Boogie Bangers & Beer
Over 130 people enjoyed a really great evening, dancing to the sounds of "Forever Young" who provided a wide selection of music for all.  We look forward to hosting this event again next year and would like to thank Highhouse Insurance Brokers, Seales Butchers, the Co-operative and Selsey Golf Club for their support, Sue and the Festival Committee for all their help and of course all of you who came along and made this event happen.

Last year the Selsey in Bloom achieved the Silver Gilt Award - we have to wait until the awards ceremony in September to know what we will get this year.

People came from far and wide to enjoy this fantastic event which was held as part of the Selsey Festival at the Academy, School Lane.We had a great evening of pop and rock music, dancing and entertainment provided by the fantastic band "Forever Young". All this plus a BBQ and raffle with drinks being available from our licensed bar, proceeds going to charity. If you missed out this year be sure to come along next year.

Golf Day 2014 The Lions Annual Golf Day at the Selsey Golf Club was once again a great success, a brilliant day's golf won by the team entered as "The Scratchers". This was then followed by a terrific meal in the Club House. To finish the day and to add to the fun, a Charity Auction was conducted by professional auctioneer, Alan Biddle, raising £525 for Help for Heroes. On behalf of The Selsey Lion's, Lion President Brian Plater would like to thank all those that participated in a fantastic and eventful day and a big thank you to the Selsey Golf Club, to Julie at The Links Restaurant and the staff for their help on the day Bangers and Blues 2014 People came from far and wide to enjoy this fantastic event which was held as part of the Selsey Festival at the Academy, School Lane. Membership : Whilst the weather was against us on Friday 12th June, Selsey & District Lions Club and Crablands Bowling Club had a joint open evening, it was good fun with prospective members having a chance to try Bowling and also meet the Lions, a great PR evening and hopefully some new members for both clubs. We are always looking for new members, male and female young and old to join an active and enthusiast team, who have common interest in helping the community while at the same time enjoying a good social life. If you interested in finding out more about our activities or thinking of becoming a Lion we would love to meet you. For further information please contact Lion Colin on 07710 405011 or email selseymembership@yahoo.co.uk
